Tips on How to Choose An Equine Dentist:

There are large differences in standards of equine dental care. If you want peace of mind and knowledge that your equine partner has received FULL MOUTH dental care:
  1. Check out your dentist’s qualifications before getting that cheap deal. All associations that test and certify dentists require hundreds of hours of experience in the field and clinical practice, classroom instruction, anatomy study and training in proper technique before the first level of certification. Ask them what level they are at, and if they are certified. A one week course or one time attendance at any course is not likely to be sufficient.
  2. Ask when they last upgraded their education – chances are if it wasn’t within the last 12-18 months they may not be aware of the best treatment for your horse.
  3. Make sure you get to feel inside your horse’s mouth and actually see what needs to be done.
  4. Insist your dentist uses a full mouth speculum – it is impossible to conduct a full oral examination without one.
  5. Find out if your dentist balances the incisors with the molars and understands the biomechanics of a natural mouth.
  6. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. The dentistry your horse receives can have a major affect on its whole being.
